Linda Merrick has established an international profile as a clarinet soloist, recording artist and clinician. She specialises in contemporary repertoire and has been at the forefront of generating new works for her instrument by British composers for the last 15 years. During this period she has performed all over the world and made over 20 solo CD recordings for a range of commercial labels.
Linda successfully combines her high-level performing career with work in Higher Education, where she is Principal at the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM). She was appointed a Professor in 2008, and remains active in the field of research, contributing through her pioneering work with electronics, innovative recording projects, and collaborative work with composers.
Linda’s particular areas of research interest are Electroacoustic Music, American Minimal Music, Contemporary Clarinet Repertoire and Extended Performance Techniques for Woodwind. The topic for her PhD dissertation was ‘Collaboration between Performers and Composers: British Clarinet Concertos 1990-2000’, completed Spring 2004 and published under the title ‘Collaboration between Composers and Performers: British Clarinet Concertos 1990-2004’ by VDM, ISBM 978-3-639-18619-2, 2009.
